Into the arms of chaos was a new beginning for us, in every sense of the word.
The long road to this album was almost like a circle and I see it as some sort of fate that we actually recorded this album with the same line-up as the album before, even though there have been several line-up changes in-between.
But that’s not all, if you’d like this is not our 5th studio album, actually it is our 6th , that’s because the 5th one called “pilgrim’s desire” never saw the light of day (a few tracks were released as bonus tracks for the Borrowed Nightmares & Forgotten Dreams album).
Lyric wise Into the Arms of Chaos was a different approach as well; it deals with all things occult, from chaos-magic to lovecraftian sound-scapes. One of the main influences beside H.P.Lovecraft was the English writer & artist Austin Osman Spare, the song Neither : Neither for example could be seen as a homage to him.
This was not the sort of concept album that was Permanent Illusions, but obviously it IS some sort of concept album, like a journey through the cabalistic tree of life which one can see at the backside cover.
Every song represents an “Station” of that tree, and every song has its own symbol which deals with the actual meaning of the certain track.
Music wise this was a change and a few steps forward to a more Gothic Rock sort of sound but with modern production techniques which we achieved by working with John A.River , who already worked for bands such as Clan of Xymox, Dead can Dance, The Virgin Prunes, to name but a few.
It is certainly one of our best albums and will always remain as such in our hearts.
The track Down by the Sea is properly the best Whispers in the Shadow song we did.
It has everything what this band is about.
But also other tracks such as The Arrival and Damned Nation will remain with us for a long time.
The really understand the concept and idea behind that record I recommend everyone interested to read some of the books from the writers which influenced both, music and lyrics: Austin Osman Spare, H.P.Lovecraft, Peter Caroll, Aleister Crowley, Asenath Mason, Kenneth Grant.
Into the Arms of Chaos is just the beginning of an 4 album circle, and only the gods know if we will be able to finish the “great work”.
